Gerald Barry b. Dec 15 1896 - d. Nov 16 1961
Mary Barry b. May 13 1900 - d. Mar 8 1933
Married Jun 19 1918
Clara McKenna Barry
Gerald had seven children with Mary Manion from Gloucester. They lived next door to Garrett and Nellie. My earliest recollection was they had an outhouse when Mary was still alive. When Mary died on a Sunday in 1933 the family was afraid John and May would first hear about it in Church. Since we had no telephones, Frank rode double on a state police motorcycle (called in when a death occurred at home) to tell us of Mary's death.
Gerald later married Clara McKenna and they lived in Philadelphia on Olny Ave. at the northern end of the Broad Street Subway. Tom (Gerald's son) used to visit Nellie and Garrett on weekends and we worked together at Barry Bros. Tom had to get the nun's permission to miss the children's mass on Sunday before he could schedule a visit.
Gerald and his family loved the Ocean. They rented the ground floor at Aunt Margaret's "Pancoast" Place on Pennsylvania Ave. near the Ocean in Atlantic City. I have no idea where Aunt Margaret fits in or even if she does. They had seventeen beds and constant company.
I stayed there one time during the week but had to leave on Friday when the hordes of people arrived. Gerald Jr., with the help of Joe and Tom, used to rent out umbrellas and beach chairs on Pennsylvania Ave. beach next to Steel Pier.
